Attach a folder on your PC, edit the originals with a safety version behind every save, let Lato edit a file for you, undo with local history, and take a file with you as a cloud copy.

Choose the folder and the access: read and edit, or reference only.
Edit in the pane; Save writes to the PC and keeps a safety version first.
Tag the file in chat and describe the change; the same safety version protects it.
History shows every managed edit; restore a file, or compare first.
A cloud copy is an independent copy for when the PC is off; it never syncs.
What each lesson covers
Choose the folder and the access: read and edit, or reference only.
The folder stays on your PC; the conversation gets a door into it. The consent window is where you decide how wide that door is: Read and edit files lets Lato and you save changes and new files there; Reference only reads and never writes. Pick the narrower one unless the job is to change files.
Practice. Open Local files from the + menu, choose Work on originals, then Choose folder on this PC. Attach a folder of documents you actually work on, with Read and edit files.
Local files → Work on originals → Choose folder on this PC → Read and edit files → Use folder.
Edit in the pane; Save writes to the PC and keeps a safety version first.
Editing original on PC means exactly that. Save writes to the same file, but only after recording a safety version, so a save is never a risk. Saved on PC · Safety version recorded is the line that tells you both happened.
Practice. Open a document in the pane, change one sentence, and Save. Read the status line under the editor.
Open README.md, add a line at the top, click Save.
Tag the file in chat and describe the change; the same safety version protects it.
With the folder attached, a chat message can name a file and ask for a change. Tag file in chat puts the exact file into your message. Lato edits the original on the PC and the pane shows the same Saved on PC · Safety version recorded line, so an AI edit is as reversible as your own.
Practice. From the pane, Tag file in chat on a document, then ask for one specific change in chat. Watch the pane update.
Rewrite the executive summary of proposals/nedlands-extension.docx in plain English, keep every figure, and save it.
History shows every managed edit; restore a file, or compare first.
History is the undo you can trust: each managed edit is a task with its files. Compare with current file shows what changed; Restore before edit puts the file back; Restore files on PC does the whole task at once. Restoring is itself an edit, so it also gets a safety version; you cannot restore yourself into a corner.
Practice. Open History, compare the file from lesson 3 with its current version, then restore it, then restore the restore.
History → Rewrite the executive summary → Compare with current file → Restore before edit.
A cloud copy is an independent copy for when the PC is off; it never syncs.
The PC is where the originals live, so when it is off, the folder is unreachable. A cloud copy solves the one case that matters: a saved file you need from your phone. Create a cloud copy uploads that file to your account; it does not sync, and the original and its history stay on the PC. Cloud copies lists them with Download and Attach to chat, on the phone too.
Practice. From an open saved file, Create a cloud copy. Then open Cloud copies on your phone and Attach to chat.
Open the proposal, Create a cloud copy, Create cloud copy. On your phone: Cloud copies → Attach to chat.
